It has come to our attention that Tony Patel has made false claims relating to his background and expertise in the field of finance and taxation on his website myUTA.com. Mr. Patel and Maverick Tax Express have also posted false "prize winners" on their website. It is unknown at this time whether any of the prize winners were real.
Some have also expressed concerns with how this tax preparation company handles privacy. Because we cannot verify the identity of individuals that may have had their personal information publically disclosed, we cannot confirm or disconfirm reports of information mishandling.
What can I do to protect myself?
When you decide on an individual to prepare your taxes, make sure that you read reviews on the service or individual prior to sending them any information. This is important for any purchase, but it is especially important when picking a tax preparer because they have access to your personal information. Additionally, most people don't understand taxes, so it can be easier for a malintentioned company to scam them.
One thing to always keep in mind when choosing a tax preparer is that a bigger refund does not necessarily mean a better tax preparer. You don't want a preparer that takes illegal deductions and leaves you to try and work it out with the IRS.

We also recommend that you request a transcript of your tax return for the years that you used Priteshkumar Patel to ensure the returns they filed were identical to the ones you received from them.
We also recommend that you file complaints with the Texas Attorney General: Consumer Complaint Form as well as the Attorney General in your home state.
If you have not had any contact with Priteshkumar Patel or Maverick Tax Express, we kindly ask that you don't file complaints with these government agencies unless you have contacts inside these agencies.
